Land Rover BAR HQ
The Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) HQ has been built on the Solent at a total cost of £15m. Funded from both private and public sources, including a £7.5m government grant, it will be the base from which four- times Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie will attempt to win GB a first America’s Cup in 2017.
The overall project time scale was very tight –a year from the commencement of site clearance to completion in June 2015. Overbury were awarded the £7.5m fit-out of the shell which contained 50k sq. ft of industrial area and 30k sq. ft of office space. This included all new infrastructure, lifts, medical centre, gym, VIP area, restaurant, kitchens, receptions, open plan and cellular offices. Their work started in January 2015 and had to be completed in only 18 weeks.
The project demanded close collaboration between the specialists on site, as the order of construction was sometimes unconventional given the time constraints.
Brendan Collins of Overbury commented:
“Normally each contractor focuses on their job in hand but here everyone had to think about the other contractors' needs and factor that into our approach”

Overbury appointed H&S as the specialist decorating contractor. We were able to exploit our longstanding working relationship with them to help complete their part of the project on time. This called for flexibility in our approach to staffing and the timing of our work schedules, and finding solutions to decorating less accessible parts of the 28 metre steel frame structure such as the triple height workshop and full height triangular lightwell.
